Angela Whittaker Horman

Angela Whittaker Horman, our loving mother, wife, sister and friend passed away quietly in her home on the morning of October 20, 2017 after a long and courageous 17 year battle with cancer.  Born in Salt Lake City on May 7, 1970, she is the youngest of five children born to Gerald “Tim” and Margaret “Ann” Whittaker. 

Angie grew up in a loving home surrounded by the blessings of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  As the youngest of five by quite a few years, she enjoyed wonderful adventures with her older sisters and brothers from Jeeping through Canyonlands, rafting, travel and skiing with the whole family, to magical weddings of older siblings.  Music was always a part of her household and it is where she fostered her love of music.

A talented musician, after graduating from Olympus High School in 1988, she attended Utah State University on a violin music scholarship graduating in 1993.  She shared her wonderful talent and touched the hearts of so many through her beautiful music.  She passed on her talent and love of music not only to her two daughters but also to the hundreds of young students she taught over the years in private lessons and at the elementary school.

Angie loved to tell people that she met her sweetheart, Shawn Horman, at a funeral.  After their first chance meeting, they crossed paths several times over a few years due to mutual friends.  Upon graduating from college, she returned to Salt Lake City and fate brought them together once again.  They spent the summer working together on a guest ranch in southern Utah, got engaged and were then married in the Salt Lake Temple on October 29, 1994.  Soon after, they moved to Mesa, Arizona for a few years before returning to Salt Lake City in the fall of 1997 a week after their first child Rachel was born.  They moved into their current home in 1999 and Sarah was born the following year.

Angie had a fun and spunky personality.  The term “sassy” has been used often to describe her.  She was funny with a quick wit and her smile was contagious.  She liked to make people laugh and retained her wonderful sense of humor even through her trials.  She once jokingly said her passions in life were eating and sleeping and that she was very talented at both.  All of her nieces and nephews adored her and she loved spending time with them even as they grew up and had children of their own.  She enjoyed all kinds of outdoor activities and loved skiing with the family.  She liked to travel and was able to see many parts of the world.  She enjoyed good food and became a very good cook.  She had a wonderful sense of style and always looked glamorous no matter if it was a night out to hear the symphony or she was home sick in bed.  When diagnosed with cancer, she said she would not let cancer define who she was or how she lived so she continued to live life to the fullest.

She was a wonderful mother who dedicated herself to her two daughters.  She was intimately involved with school, music lessons, recitals, birthday parties, Halloween costumes, holiday fun and everyday life.  She tried very hard to never let her condition interfere with their childhood.  Here greatest wish was to be able to raise her two children, they are the reason she fought so long and hard to stay.  They are a testament to her faith and perseverance.

A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she held many callings and enjoyed serving others. Even with two small children and enduring difficult cancer treatments, she continued to serve others in many ways.  It was always very hard for her to say no.     

Angie was loved by all who knew her and more often than not left you smiling by what she said or did.  She had a positive impact on the people around her.  She left a lasting legacy of music and love and the world is a better place for having her in it.  She will be greatly missed.

Angela is survived by her husband, Shawn; daughters Rachel and Sarah; her mother Margaret “Ann” Whittaker; brothers Greg (Debbie) Whittaker and Steven Whittaker; sisters Sue (Michael) Sansom and Lisa (Howard) Sorensen; preceded in death by her father Gerald Whittaker.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at 11:00am in the LDS Greenfield Chapel located at 6623 South Greenfield Way (1800 E.) Cottonwood Heights, UT, Where a viewing will precede the services from 9:30 am to 10:30 am.  A viewing will also be held on Friday, October 27, 2017 at Holbrook Mortuary located at 3251 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, UT from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery 1342 East 500 South, Salt Lake City, UT.

Special thanks to all the wonderful doctors, nurses and care givers that have given Angie such professional and loving care over many years.  Your dedication to your profession along with your humanity not only provided life preserving care but also gave her great comfort knowing she was seen as a person and a friend and not just a patient.  You are all the unsung heroes in our family’s life, there is no way to express the extent of our gratitude.
