Ann Mellor Whiting Timothy died peacefully in her home, Thursday, February 2, 2017. She was born in Provo, Utah, August 13, 1931 to Ralph Lee Mellor and Ada Saxey. When Ann was two, her father died from heart failure and her mother later married Vernon Whiting. Ann’s love of school, theatre, their family cabin at Wildwood, and friends made for a happy childhood.

Ann was passionate about drama from a young age and had her first main stage production at BYU at the age of eight. This experience led to a lifetime of involvement in the theatre, including at Provo High—where she graduated as the valedictorian—and BYU—where she graduated with honors in education and was named the most outstanding actress in the theatre department.

Ann married Jerry D. Timothy in the Salt Lake Temple in 1953 (later divorced) and soon moved to Fort Ord, California, where Jerry served in the United States Army. Ann and Jerry had three children—Steven, Mark, and Julie—who were the joy of Ann’s life. In 1963, Ann and Jerry were called on a special mission to Montevideo, Uruguay, which proved to be one of the greatest experiences for their family.

Ann began a career in what she loved most—teaching—and spent 19 happy years at William Penn Elementary while simultaneously receiving a masters degree in education from Utah State University. Loved by her students and faculty, in 1991 the Granite Education Foundation recognized her as the Outstanding Educator of the Year, a rare honor for an elementary school teacher.

Ann’s love of the Gospel and strong testimony touched many lives as she served faithfully in the Relief Society and Young Women organizations, as drama director, music director, and as a ward librarian in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Some of her greatest achievements were being a faithful mother, wife, and grandmother.

She always taught that we needed to live worthy to “go home” and lived her life as such. She was a cheerleader to many individuals in her life, especially her family. Ann’s life was marked by love—love of her family, friends, teaching, travel, and the Gospel. She considered her family and her testimony of the Gospel to be the greatest gifts of her life. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her mother, Ada Whiting; father, Ralph Mellor; step-father, Bill Whiting; sister, Peggy Hill; brother, Johnny Whiting; son, Steven Timothy; and grandson, Bjorn Thorsen.

Survived by son, Mark Timothy (Linda); daughter, Julie Cole (Roland); daughter-in-law, Barbara Timothy Bowen; grandchildren: Adam Timothy (Eva), Michael Timothy, Collin Timothy, Daniel Timothy (Angelique), Eric Timothy, Jonathan Timothy, Keleanna Thorsen, Natalie Timothy, Lily Bowen, Caleb Bowen; and great-grandchildren: Ian Timothy, London Timothy, Skye Timothy, and Easton Timothy.

Funeral will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Chapel, 1160 East Vine Street, with a viewing prior to the funeral 9:30-10:30 a.m. and a viewing Friday, February 10, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East.
