Coralie Naomi Giese Child

It is with love and sorrow to announce the passing of Coralie Naomi Giese Child on June 22, 2017 from natural causes. Coralie was born October 9, 1931, in Greeley, Nebraska to James Joseph and Maude Gertrude Giese.  She was the second of three children. Like thousands of other Midwestern farming families during the Great Depression, Coralie’s family moved from Nebraska in search of employment - eventually settling in Mesa, Arizona.

After graduating from Mesa High School, she began working for Mountain Bell Telephone Company. She soon accepted a job transfer to Salt Lake City where she met her sweetheart and husband for 56 years, Cleve Sheldon Child. She enjoyed raising her two sons from home until they were both out of elementary school; at which time she joined the workforce again until her retirement from Qwest Communications. Although an outspoken conservative on a lot of issues (we teased her about being the Utah anchor for Fox News!), she could speak equally strong on women’s reproductive rights and women’s rights in the workplace. Whether it was throwing a quick meal during the week after work or making something special the day before a dinner party or holiday - Coralie was an amazing cook. We will certainly miss her birthday cakes and the pies made from her backyard fruit trees. She especially liked watching college football, PGA golf tournaments and crime dramas. Whether it was Murder She Wrote or Law and Order, she had an uncanny ability to correctly guess the murderer! Sewing, reading, playing bridge and golfing were also lifelong hobbies. Coralie was especially proud of her grandchildren. They called her “Nana” so much that everyone else in her family started calling her that, too. We will miss you Nana!

Preceded in death by her husband, her parents and brother Gerald Giese. She is survived by her sister Bonnie Price, her children Christian Child (Melisse Grey) and Steven Child, and three grandchildren - Jack, Tori and Rochelle.

A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Christ United Methodist Church, 2375 East 3300 South, Salt Lake City, Utah. In lieu of flowers, please donate to your favorite charity.
