Don Baxter Schofield (“Penrod”), age 81, passed away peacefully at home October 3, 2016. He was greeted and embraced on the other side by his two boys, Steve and Jim, who went recently before him. He was born November 21, 1934, in Spring City, Utah, where he learned to work hard at a very young age on the farm. As a boy he earned money on a paper route, riding 18 miles on a horse, sometimes in deep snow drifts, uphill both ways.

Don was an exceptional athlete at North Sanpete High School, first string in everything, football quarterback, basketball guard and track sprinter. He gained the nickname “Penrod” somewhere along the way and has always been known as a fun-loving character. Don married his high school sweetheart, Veda Peterson, January 8, 1954, in the Manti Temple. Together they built a beautiful life, home and family. He continues to be a loving and devoted husband and father, while his sweetheart has been his faithful support for 62 years. Shortly after marriage Don attended trade school, becoming a Journeyman brick mason and excelling at his profession. He gained great respect for his skill, work ethic and camaraderie. His brickwork is seen in several landmarks. Don is a man of action and few words, always there to lift, repair and build for neighbors in need. Many neighborhood fireplaces and fences bear his quiet, uncompensated signature.

Don is preceded in death by his sons, Steven and James; and son-in-law, Matthew Workman. He is survived by his eternal companion, Veda, his children, Raynalyn Workman, Dawnette (Craig) Jolley, Sandra (Cameron) Browning, daughter-in-law, Becky, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Monday, October 10, 2016, 11:00am at the Butler 7th Ward chapel, 1355 E 7200 S, Cottonwood Heights, with a viewing prior to the service from 9:30-10:30am. An additional viewing will be held Sunday evening 6:00-8:00pm at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S 2300 E, Salt Lake City. Interment will be at Elysian Burial Gardens.
