Eve Hanna Weller was born June 8th, 1924 to Gustav and Margarete Weller in Schneidemuehl, Germany. She was the 5th of 12 children. At nine months of age, she and her family crossed the Atlantic Ocean to settle in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her parents were converts to the LDS Church and they fled Germany as the country began to experience political and economic turmoil.
Despite the challenges of growing up a German immigrant during this time, Eve was incredibly vivacious and even played on the first all-female softball team in Utah. After finishing high school, she went on to work at her Father’s bookstore, which later became known as Sam Weller’s Zion Bookstore.
While clerking at the bookstore, Eve met Jim Hirst, who worked at a jewelry store down the street. They began dating and soon after, decided to marry. Jim and Eve were married April 23rd, 1947. Together, they raised seven children and were sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple after Jim converted to the LDS faith.
Sadly, Jim passed away in 1973 at the age of 51 due to heart complications. Eve was left to raise her children on her own and continued to work at the bookstore. After retiring in 1997 at age 73, Eve devoted herself to temple work and caring for her physically challenged son, Joe. She loved playing with her grandchildren and could often be found jumping with them on the trampoline, even well into her 80’s.
On March 29th, 2018, at the age of 93, Eve was reunited with her loving husband and daughter Martha along with many family members and dear friends, who have passed on before her.
Eve will be remembered as a woman of faith and endurance. She was devoted to church attendance and scripture study until her last breath. She also was incredibly energetic and had a quick wit. Eve is survived by six of her children; Paul (Bonnie Webb), Kristine (James Jenkins), Joseph, Daniel, James “Bud” (Kathleen Hughes), John (Suzette Cook), 27 grandchildren, and 59 great-grandchildren.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude for the tender care provided by the staff of Comfort Worx Hospice & Millcreek Pacifica Senior Living.
