Grant Leif Birkeland, “Uncle Grant”, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2015 after a courageous fight against the effects of Parkinsons Disease.  He was born on April 15, 1940, the son of Leif and Dora Engh Birkeland.  Grant was busy doing good things and serving others his whole life.  He loved planting trees and the entire Salt Lake Valley is dotted with the results of his labor.  His beautiful garden was enjoyed by all who passed by.  He was an excellent carpenter and will be fondly remembered by the family whenever we go to the cabin in the Unita’s.  He graduated from Olympus High School and served his country in the US Army Reserve.  As a valiant member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in many callings but his favorite was teaching Primary.  He served a mission to Norway, the country of his ancestors.

He is survived by a brother Steven (Kristen), sisters Maurine (Keith) Newbold, Annette Livsey, and sister-in-law Lynne Birkeland as well as 22 nieces and nephews and their children who all adore him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Diane and Jaret Gustafson and brother Clifford Birkeland.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 28 at Noon, at the East Mill Creek 15th Ward Chapel, 3750 S Hillside Lane (2600 E.). Friends may call Friday evening 6:30 to 8:00pm at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S 2300 E, well as at the chapel Saturday morning from 10:30 to 11:30am prior to the funeral. Online guestbook to post messages and tributes for the family is available at: www.HolbrookMortuary.com

The family would like to thank the Doctors and staff at Silverado for their tender and loving care.
