Hugh Marion Henderson

Hugh Marion Henderson, wonderful, husband, dad, grandpa and friend passed away peacefully on August 19, 2017. He was born Oct. 15, 1927 at Highland, Utah to Hugh Henderson and Dora Strasburg.  Hugh attended South High School and LDS Business College and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.  He married Gloria Taylor in 1948 in the Salt Lake Temple and they had 3 daughters together.  He owned his own trucking business at the time Gloria died in 1961.  He married Shirlene Smith in 1962 in the Manti Temple.  Shirlene brought 3 sons and a daughter to the marriage.  Together, they added 2 more daughters and a son.  Hugh provided for this large blended family of 12 by driving truck for Deseret Transportation for 26 years.  He was proud of his record of 3 million miles without an accident and was awarded “Truck Driver of the Year” in 1986.

Hugh was a member of the LDS church and served many positions including teacher, Priesthood Leader, Young Men Leader and Bishopric Counselor.  He and his wife, Shirlene, served a mission in the Texas Houston East Mission.  Together they served as Salt Lake Temple Ordinance workers for 7 years.  Hugh had a strong testimony of the gospel, he loved the Savior, loved his country, loved music, family history, and woodworking.  He was active in all sports, and always willing to help others.  He was known to his grandkids as the “Train Grandpa”.  Above all, he loved his family and will be missed by them.

Hugh is survived by his wife Shirlene; brother, Frank Harman; and Children: Mike Henderson, Kim (Shar) Henderson, Pam (Joe) English, Debbie (Scott) Bingham, Connie (Dave) Ott, Vickie (Mark) Hunter, Derk (Denise) Henderson, Marie (Harold) Adams, Annette (Gary) Yenchik, and David (Holly) Henderson.  He is survived by 38 grandchildren, 65 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.  Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters and 2 grandsons.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 23, 2017 at 11:00am at the Rosecrest 2nd Ward, 3101 South 2300 East. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday evening, August 22, 2017 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at Holbrook Mortuary 3251 South 2300 East, and from 9:30am to 10:30am on Wednesday prior to services at the church.  Interment:  Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.  Online messages to the family may be made at www.holbrookmortuary.com.
