Lynn Andrew Sorensen, 97, died peacefully of natural causes, January 4, 2017, at Cottonwood Place Assisted Living Center in Holladay, UT, his home for the past 2 years.

Lynn was born September 25, 1919, in Salt Lake City, UT, the first child of Ulrich Andrew Sorensen and Fannie Boam Sorensen. He graduated from South High School and attended the University of Chicago on an academic and athletic scholarship, the U.S. Air Force Navigator School, and graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Business Administration. While serving his Country during WW II, he married Janet Weech, February 12, 1943, in the Salt Lake Temple, and they became the parents of nine children. She died on April 23, 1997.

Lynn’s business career included administrative positions at Salt Lake Cabinet, Litton Industries, LTV Electro Systems, Deseret News Press, and various positions for the LDS Church.

Lynn devoted many years of his life to service for the LDS Church. He was among the first missionaries called to serve in the Brazilian Mission. He served as Bishop of the Kenwood Second Ward, on stake high councils, as a member of several general Church boards, as Stake Patriarch, Temple Sealer, President of the L.D.S. Brazil South Mission (1973-1976), Director of Temporal Affairs in Brazil (1982-1985), a Member of the Quorum of the Seventy with assignments in the Brazil Area Presidency and in the North American Northeast Region, all with Janet by his side. He also spent four years as International Materials Management manager for Latin America.

After Janet’s death, Lynn married Sara Broadbent Paulsen September 21, 1998 for time in the Salt Lake Temple. They served together as the first Temple President and Matron of the Brazil Porto Alegre Temple (2000-2003). She died September 1, 2004. Lynn’s service in Brazil totaled 15 years. He is loved and remembered by many of the saints throughout the country.

On October 27, 2005, Lynn married Edythe Rae Robbins Tollstrup for time in the Salt Lake Temple. Late in life, they enjoyed 11 years of marriage together.

Lynn and his father built the family home on 30th South in Salt Lake City. He loved caring for the huge garden and orchard that extended behind the 2 houses on each side of the home. He enlisted the sometimes reluctant help of his children, teaching them the value of working together to provide food for the family. He also loved refereeing football and basketball, camping and traveling.

Lynn is survived by his wife, Edythe; 8 of his 9 children: Marti (Dennis) Lythgoe, Kathleen (Stanford) McConkie, Lynn D. (Jennifer), Cindy Newport, Kent (Nedra), Scott (Suzy), Gary (Lori), Wayne (Janet), and daughter-in-law, Nancy; his brother, Richard J. (Mona) Sorensen; 40 grandchildren and 76 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by wives Janet and Sara; his son, Craig; his parents; his sisters, Mary McInnis and Virginia Nielsen; and his brother, Lincoln.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 11, at 11:00 a.m. in the Little Cottonwood 5th Ward, 6350 South Rodeo Lane (1540 E.), Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends may call at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, January 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and at the Little Cottonwood 5th Ward Chapel from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. before the funeral. Interment will be at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, Lynn requested donations to the L.D.S. Church Perpetual Education fund.
