Raymond Jesse Broadhead was born March 25, 1931, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, to Jesse Broadhead and Elfrieda Ehlert, and passed away with his family at his side, in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Friday, October 14, 2016, at the age of 85.  His journey is complete, and he is at peace, surrounded by those who have preceded him.

Ray was preceded in death by his wife Frances Dorothy Huddlestone, whom he met at a church picnic.  They were married March 16, 1955 in the Cardston, Alberta, Canada LDS Temple.  He later married a lifelong friend, Velyma Belle James on June 15, 2013, with whom he shared the twilight years of his life.  Ray is survived by his wife Velyma, his four children Dan, Kathy, Peggy and Mark, 12 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.

As a Canadian farm boy, Ray learned to work hard and love the land.  Later in life, he would own and farm property in Utah and Idaho, just for fun he would say.  It seemed that there was soil in his veins.  He shared his love of the land through hard work and stories of his faithful boyhood horse “Old Blue”.

To the happy people of Samoa, whom he loved and served as a missionary, he was known as “Misi Iesi”.  Their language was music to his ears.  He continued to love and serve them throughout his life.

For over 40 years, Ray owned and operated CMS, a mining assay laboratory, where he was boss, chemist, scientist, inventor, and tinkerer.  It was through CMS that he taught his children and employees the value of hard work and dedication.

He devoted his life, resources, and many tireless hours, to serving and helping others.  Generations of young men have become men of honor, as they have followed his leadership and example.

We called him Gramps, and that name described him perfectly.  All those who knew him, will miss him deeply.  Gramps, watch over us until our journey is complete, when you will gather us together as our great patriarch again.  May we live our lives with honor, as you did yours.  Until then, Gramps has “Gone Somewhere”.

A viewing will be held Friday October 21, 2016, from 6:00-8:00 pm, at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah, and on Saturday October 22, from 9:00-10:30 am, at the East Millcreek 12th Ward LDS Chapel, 3103 East Craig Drive (3650 South), Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 am at the same LDS Chapel, and burial services will follow at Elysian Gardens, 1075 East College Street (4580 South), Murray, Utah.  Messages to the family can be posted at http://www.HolbrookMortuary.com
