Charlyn Sorensen Obituary

At the age of 88, Charlyn Russell Sorensen passed away on March 11, 2024, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on August 25, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Charles Lyman Russell and Vera Gibbons Russell. She married Neil Hans Sorensen on June 10, 1955, at the Salt Lake Temple. She is survived by Karma Russell Bruin (Sister), Vickie L Dean (Mark), Marcia Miner (Boyd), Russell F. Sorensen (Mequette), Douglas N. Sorensen (Jane), Lisa Shearer (Michael), Derrick L. Sorensen (Melinda), 22 Grandchildren and 34 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly.

Mom was a valiant servant of our Savior Jesus Christ her entire life. She was a dedicated minister for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving at both the Stake and Ward level in Primary, Young Women’s and Relief Society. She loved sharing her testimony of the Gospel with her family, friends, and ward family. The last thing she accomplished here on earth was having her temple recommend renewed. She loved serving in the Salt Lake City & Jordan River temples and maintained her friendship with those she served with up to the time of her passing.

Mom made friends easily. She also maintained those friendships her entire life. She still associated with friends from high school, her and Dad’s Navy years, the Highland View Ward, the Silver Creek Ward, her Francis Ward, and her work friends. Mom started her career working at Aurbach’s. Mom finished her working career as executive secretary, at Mountain America Credit Union. She loved her jobs at Mountain America. She made lifetime friends that she said, “helped her grow and become successful at her career.” She also served on the Board of Directors of Mountain America Credit Union. She would want us to thank all the Presidents of Mountain America and Board Members she worked with you were examples of professionalism and kindness and she loved working and traveling with. You were more than co-workers; you were her dear friends.

Mom would say her greatest accomplishment was her family. The happiest moments were when she was with her family. Her love of family was not just her children. She loved being with her extended family on Easter, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, North Fork camping, fishing, family reunions, Thanksgiving and Christmas. She loved traveling with her sisters to see other siblings and to just vacation.

Mom loved her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren. She went to and loved every football, baseball, basketball, soccer, swimming, skiing, track, dance recitals, piano recitals, school events, birthday parties, dinners at a restaurant and traveling that her family participated in. She was our greatest fan.

Mom loved traveling with our dad. Whether it was by airplane, ship (not her favorite, she got seasick) or car. She treasured those special moments with “her Neil.” Mom loved with all her heart, gave more than she had, served someone everyday of her life and taught all of us, by example, to be a valiant servant of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

She is preceded in death by her husband Neil H Sorensen, her parents Charles L and Vera G Russell, her Granddaughter BeckyAnn S. Cardinelle, her brothers Austin (Margaret) and Raymond, her sisters Ruth(Lorenzo), June(Leon), Iris(Johnny), Ina, Gerry Bruin(brother-in-law), her In-Laws, Frank & Rhoda Sorensen, sister-in-law Lois, brother-in-law Dale(Mimi) and Sister-in-Law Irene(Clifford).
