Cora Mickelson Thorell

Our very beloved Cora Mickelson Thorell, who was in her 98th year, passed away in the comfort of her own home surrounded by family on Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Holladay, Utah.

Cora was born on July 1, 1920 in Logan Utah, the daughter of John and Elva Mickelson.  She married Roy C. Thorell on February 5, 1942 in the Logan LDS Temple.

Cora’s life was filled with untiring love and service for her husband, Roy, during the 69 years they were together.  Since Roy’s passing, whenever Cora would see a contrail of a jet plane, she was sure he was looking down on her and she would wave at her sweetheart.  During World War II, Cora worked as a riveter on an airplane assembly line.

Cora graduated from Logan High School, Utah State University and received her Special Education teaching certificate from the University of Utah.  She taught at the Murray School District for 19 years and was loved and admired by her students and faculty.   She was so loved that many students would come to her and ask how they could qualify to get into her class.  She implemented a reading program for special education that was followed for years thereafter.  

Cora loved her home and family and took great pride in caring for both.  She was always concerned for the welfare of others.  Cora also took great care in her appearance and even in her later years, she always wore a strand of complementary beads.  She cherished her gold wedding band that Roy made for her.

Survivors include her son, Kenneth Roy (Sondra) Thorell; two daughters, Karen (David) Reams and Kathy (Mark) Farrell; seven grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.  

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Holbrook Mortuary located at 3251 South 2300 East, Salt Lake City, Utah.  Friends and family are invited to visit that same day at 10:00 a.m. prior to the funeral service which will start at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will be at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
