Elmer Gerber Obituary

ELMER is derived from Old English æþel (noble) and mær (famous).

LEROY is an archaic spelling of le roi, meaning "The King"

GERBER (from Old High German (ledar) garawo 'leather preparer')

ELMER LEROY GERBER was one of the finest human beings to have ever lived. He was born in Spring of 1940, the youngest child to Conrad Gerber and Dorothy Kelsey. He grew up hunting, trapping, and fishing with his father and brothers, cousins and uncles, and had a deep love for nature and the great outdoors. He has a profound and fervent testimony of Jesus Christ, The Redeemer of the World.  For this reason, he spent a lifetime of missionary work for the Church of Jesus Christ, of Latter-day Saints. He served a two and a half year LDS Mission to Germany and two additional missions to the Kingdom of Tonga. He specialized in family history and attended the LDS business college studying Danish research and deciphering ancient texts. All of his endeavors were to the building up of the Kingdom of God on this Earth. He loved his family, especially his heritage, and spent a lifetime doing genealogical and temple work for his ancestors. His mother proclaimed that she knew he was special, even before he was born, because he had appeared to her in a dream prior to his birth. She believed that his calling was in doing genealogy and facilitating the redemption of those spirits. He certainly spent every day of his life in a state of unconditional love for those souls who had contributed their blood to his.

Among these noble ancestors are the following Grandparents…

Roy married a beautiful Tongan/German woman, Tisina Melila Wolfgramm in 1963 and with her, fathered five children- Patricia, Christine, Teuila, David and Daniel. He was very hard working and set forth an example of self sufficiency and charity. He financed the immigration of the entire family of Iohani and Salote Wolfgramm. From this selfless, generous act came forth many renowned musicians, artists, and performers who have graced stages all over the world. He was the person to make sure these individuals had a chance to accomplish their American Dream.

Roy, himself, was a very humble man and encouraged his children to not be "Of This World". Translated, this meant to not long for material things, but to seek for the things of the Spirit. He encouraged his children to cultivate a close and personal relationship with their Heavenly Father and to lean not unto their own understanding. He was soft spoken and tender hearted but a vigilant and honorable warrior in the cause of freedom…freedom from sin, freedom from lust and anger, freedom from the trappings of mortality.

He enlisted in the United States Army and served wonderfully there. He loved his country and would weep at the singing of the Star Spangled Banner and the hope it represented for so many. He accepted and thought the best of everyone, regardless of race, color, creed, or religion. He found worth and beauty in all that God created.

At a very young age, Roy was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, which he called his great teacher and the best thing that had ever happened to him. He suffered continually from this condition for over 60 years, and was also riddled with other age related disabilities which he courageously endured, embraced and transcended, becoming a glowing diamond in the Refiner's fire. He stood by his belief that there is a God, that He loves us, that He knows exactly what He is doing, and we should cherish every heartbreak, every foe, every moment of this life.

Roy served in many LDS church leadership positions including the Seventies, bishoprics, heading genealogical departments, serving family history missions and working as a sentinel in the Salt Lake Temple. He made sure his children were well aware of the love and sacrifice of their pioneer ancestors, who had laid down their lives for their belief in God. He is a direct descendant from the very first European settlers who came to America on the Mayflower and other ships. He is blood related to many past United States Presidents and the current Royal Families of Europe.

In his final years, Elmer LeRoy Gerber celebrated and cherished his many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He would often remark how beautiful and intelligent they all were, and that it was all because of his great genes. He had a fantastic sense of humor, often self deprecating, and never took life's ups and downs too seriously. It was all just part of the journey. He adored and revered his parents, siblings, and forbearers. He honored the Holy Melchizedek Priesthood, pronounced upon his head, all the days of his life. He embraced the role of husband, father, grandfather and patriarch. He knew who he was. He knew he was a son of the Most High God. His testimony of these things are sealed forever in the hearts of all those who knew, loved, and descended from him.

On the rarest of Celestial days, January 31, 2018, the day when the Moon, Earth, and Sun aligned, he fell into a restful sleep and was called by his Father to return home. With every breath, we declare his strength, that he was a righteous man, committed through and through to the Light and Knowledge entrusted to him. He loved and honored the Lord.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Tisina Wolfgramm Gerber, 5 children, 21 grand children and 11 great grandchildren (2 in utero).
