Frank Leon Moore Jr.

Frank Leon Moore, Jr. was born March 26, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the oldest of 6 children born to Frank Leon, Sr. and Clara Louise Bangerter Moore.  He was known as Leon in his family and as Frank to others.  He was a sickly baby, and when they took a trip to visit relatives in Idaho, his mother took him to the old country doctor.  He told her to add 1 tablespoon of cream in his first bottle of the day, in the second bottle to add 2 tablespoons, and 3 tablespoons in the third, and so on. It worked, and he grew healthy and was 6 feet in height.

In junior high school, he loved photography, which he got from his father.  He took the camera to school and took a lot of pictures of girls, of course, but other things as well.

One of his cousins, Joseph Schmidt, and Frank once had a contest to see who could eat the most waffles.  Frank’s mother cooked the waffles. Frank won the contest by eating 20 waffles while Joseph only managed 19-½.

He graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City in 1947.   He enjoyed eating raisin pie, which was also his father’s favorite.  The bakery across the street from South made them, so he would take his lunch money and go buy a piece.  They were really thick and he would cut them in half and have them for two days.

While a senior in high school, he met his wife Ruth at an assembly. She was sitting with a group of her friends in back of him. He liked the sound of her voice, so he turned around and asked her for a date.  Frank and Ruth Elizabeth Stange were married for time and eternity on September 1, 1948, in the Salt Lake Temple.

Frank worked for the US Post Office from age 19 until he retired.  He also worked for the Deseret News, supervising delivery in his assigned district.

Frank loved to travel, and the couple took many trips around the country including the New England states as well as the west coast.  In the 1950s, he helped his father build a cabin in the Soapstone Basin area of the Uinta Mountains.  He and Ruth enjoyed spending much of their summers there, and it was a place of rest and solace to him throughout his life.

He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life, holding many positions in wards and stakes.  He also served in the Salt Lake Temple as a veil worker for 52 years.  He loved doing this.

One of his other passions was genealogy, and he spent many years researching his family tree.  One of his callings in the stake was over the German name extraction program. He also loved to read and had an extensive library in his home.

Frank and Ruth had 3 children, Frank Leon III, Robert Steven, and John Richard.  John passed away October 1, 1959, at the age of 20 months.

Frank has now gone to join his lovely wife, Ruth, who passed away on December 27, 1993.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, son John, parents Frank and Clara, brothers Allen, James, and Dick and brother-in-law Stanley Parker.  He is survived by sons Frank (Vicky), Robert (Carole), sisters Louise Parker and Mary Moore, sisters-in-law Carol Moore and Helen Stange, 6 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.  Frank passed away September 17, 2017 in Holladay, Utah.

His funeral is under the direction of Holbrook Mortuary and will be held Thursday, September 28, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS Olympus 3rd Ward, 4100 S. Camille Street, Holladay.  Prior to the services, a viewing will be held from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m.  Interment will follow at Elysian Burial Gardens.
