On Sunday, November 18, 2018, Gary Bernell Jensen passed away at the age of 76, surrounded by his family. Gary was born on November 4, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Reinald Bernell and Marion Waldo Jensen. He graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mathematics and a Master’s Degree in Computer Science. On June 15, 1965, he married his high school sweetheart, LuAnn Melville. Together they raised 7 children. Gary served a mission in the Bavarian Mission (1962-1964). He served with LuAnn in the Germany, Frankfurt Mission (2010-2012) and the Utah, Salt Lake City East Mission (2014-2016). Gary was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. His favorite callings were serving in the scouting program and more recently as “Nursery Grandpa.” He enjoyed the outdoors, camping, backpacking, and coaching. He coached many different soccer teams and was known to many players as “Gar-Bear.” Gary’s greatest joy was his family. Gary is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Karl. He is survived by his wife; his children Mark (Shannon), Karin Cooper (Jerry), Kristine Davies (Jeff), Michael (Keersten), Michelle Peterson (Brad), Janet Herzog (Hazen), and Brent (Katie); 29 grandchildren; sisters Diane Staples (Steve), Cherie Maxfield, and Kohnie Jensen; and sister-in-law Pam Jensen.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, November 21, 2018, at 11:00 am at The Valley View 4th Ward building located at 2125 East Evergreen Avenue (3435 South), SLC, UT. A viewing will be held at Holbrook Mortuary on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 pm at 3251 South 2300 East, SLC, UT, and at the church on Wednesday prior to the funeral from 9:30 -10:30 am.
