I fondly remember Bro. Scharffs from my days at West High in the mid-60s--a wonderful, kindly man.

What a great man! I enjoyed learning so much from him at the semester at BYU in Nauvoo in 2005. He will be greatly missed. Until we meet again, we love you Brother Scharffs!

I wish I was in Utah today! I wish I could see cousins I haven't seen in decades. I remember fondly family gatherings at the Scharffs home. I send my love and support during this time of loss for your family. Gil was a giant among men. I did see him and his wife a few years back in the Mesa temple. It was so nice to see Gil and meet his wife. We all grieve today. I love you all! WIsh I could see you! I miss you!

Gil was my last missionary companion and in 1958 succeeded me as second counselor in the North German Mission Presidency. His maturity, religious dedicatin, and intellectual gifts were a special asset to our endeavor. He was unusually sensitive and always a gentleman. Our paths failed to cross when I later taught at the UofU, where Gil later distinguished himself on the faculty of the Institute of Religion. (I had meanwhile transferred to BYU.) The last time I saw him was over ten years ago when, during retirement in Bountiful, I encountered him a 'new name' booth at the Bountiful temple, where I was then serving. This gave us little opportunity to more than say a delighted "Hello" before he moved on. I so regret that I did not make a greater effort to make re-contact and stay in touch while we were still living so near each other. Our 'Mitarbeit' is among my fondest memories from now nearly sixty years ago, and I look forward to getting re-acquainted before much longer on the other side of the Veil. .

To Brett and family,
I extend our deep sympathies on the passing of this wonderful gentleman. I am certain that he blessed the lives of countless individuals and families in addition to your during his "life well lived."

We are with you in spirit as the snow may keep us away. All our love to you at this time and to his children. He was an excellent example of faith, service, kindness and always learning. Love you

I'm so sorry for your loss. Gil was an amazing man. I so enjoyed our Symphony parties at your home. He was a great example and a good boss. I also enjoyed a few of his institute classes. He was the hardest working person I have ever known.
