JoAnn Walton Brown

JoAnn Rae Southam Walton Brown, age 82, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2019 after battling Parkinson’s for more than two decades.

JoAnn was born in Ogden, Utah on April 5, 1937 to Dorothy Maybelle Cowley & William Leland Southam as the youngest of four children. 

JoAnn was creative, artistic, and adventurous.  Artistically, she could see and create what others couldn’t.  Her creations brought great joy to her and smiles to all around her.  JoAnn loved to host a party.  Her happiest days were around a campfire, or her player piano, singing, sharing stories and poetry, and playing any stringed or wind instrument available.

Born out of the necessity to provide for her young family, JoAnn fearlessly turned her creativity and love for making fun into a four-decade career as the owner of the Costume Closet, where she provided her customers with all the items they needed to create their own celebrations and happy times.  Her strong-will, independence, and resourcefulness, proved invaluable throughout her career and lifetime.  And, oh yes, she always had plenty of projects to pass out to any takers. 

JoAnn was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  Her heart was full of charity and compassion as she helped many, many people in need of food, shelter, and love.  She knew, loved, and served our Savior, Jesus Christ.

JoAnn is survived by her three children: Rick (Leonette), Lori, and Ty (Kristen); her six grandchildren: David (Sarah Katherine), Cody, KC, Whitney (Luke), Paige (Braiden), and Elliot; the father of her children, Dick; and five of her siblings: Vesta, Mel (Margo), Lynn (LeeAnn), Les (Nancy), and Kurt (Jeanne).

JoAnn is preceded in death by her parents and five of her siblings: Don (Joyce), Jeanie (Larry survives), Hal, Steven, Dean, and Bob.

The family wishes to thank all who provided care for JoAnn, and our family, throughout her long battle with Parkinson’s.  And, the family is especially grateful to Lori for the many years of full-time care she provided to Mom.

Please join us in celebrating her remarkable life at funeral services to be held Thursday, August 29, 2019 at 11:00am at the Winder 7th Ward, 4350 South 1100 East. Friends and family are also invited to visit Wednesday evening 6:30-8:00pm at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East and at the church Thursday morning 9:30-10:30am prior to the service. Interment will follow at Elysian Burial Gardens.
