Joseph Sam Hirst

Our dear brother Joseph Sam Hirst passed away peacefully in his sleep June 11, 2019 in Logan, Utah. He was born January 6, 1953 in Salt Lake City. He was the third child born to Eve Weller Hirst and James W. Hirst. Joe was born with severe disabilities. However, his loving parents taught him that physical challenges should never limit his ability to succeed.

He graduated from Skyline High School and was manager of several athletic teams and even earned a letterman’s jacket. He went on to earn an associate degree from Salt Lake Community College. Joe demonstrated incredible self-discipline and focus. He had a career at US West Communications and retired after more than 20 years. He only missed one day of work during that entire time and always took his responsibilities seriously. Joe was always punctual. Many said you could set your watch by Joseph Hirst.

Joe was a disciple of Jesus Christ. He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Despite his challenges he served in many callings. He served a 3-year mission in the Canyon Rim Stake. He was a member of several priesthood quorum leaderships as well as a ward and stake executive secretary. He continued to attend his church meetings and the temple even when his limited physical abilities were further diminishing and he was no longer able to walk or be mobile. One of his most prized possessions was his temple recommend, which was still valid when he passed away.

Joseph was a thoughtful and compassionate family member. He always put others before himself. Even in his last few days he wished he could do something and provide service to his family instead of receiving it. Although limited physically, he was able to overcome adversity. Some have said that he was the personification of the beatitudes of Christ.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents and sister Martha. He is survived by his sister Kristine (James) Jenkins, and brothers Paul (Bonnie), Dan, James “Bud” (Kathy), John (Suzette), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He fought a good fight and won the battle; well done!

The family expresses special appreciation to the Hospice staff, all who served Joe at Sunshine Terrace, Dr. Brian Carlson, and the branch presidency of the Sunshine Terrace Branch.

At Joseph’s request, a graveside service will take place at Elysian Gardens, 1075 East 4580 South, Millcreek, Utah 84117, at 11:00 am Saturday, June 15, 2019.
