Martha Raye Fulghum

Martha Raye Fulghum passed from this life at her home the afternoon of December 8, 2017, at the age of 92.  She was born on September 20, 1925 in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Samuel B. and Mary Ann Carraway Fulghum.  Martha was the youngest of four girls, all who preceded her in death -- Ila Gray Smith, Hilda Marie Burton, and Edna Grace Haymore.  She is survived by loving nieces and nephews. 

Her life was truly a miracle having been born weighing less than two pounds. She slept on a pillow in a shoebox in the oven, was fed by an eye dropper and wore baby doll clothes in the early days of her life.  Marthie was always in excellent health her whole life until the last two years.

She was very self-sufficient, smart and loved working with her hands, always doing her own repairs, building and lawn care.  She could fix anything, and her life was of service to others who needed her skills.  Her humor and love of family made her a favorite aunt. Marthie’s love of finding anything on sale was a wonder to behold.

The first half of her life was spent in her beloved North Carolina.  Her family was a large part of the early beginnings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Goldsboro and High Point areas. In 1960, Martha Raye left North Carolina with a little southern drawl, a taste for southern food, love of church and family, and moved to Salt Lake City.  She worked at the University of Utah in the Pharmacology Department for 17 years, a job she enjoyed very much.  Martha Raye retired from the Salt Lake County Clerk’s Office in 1989, and loved every day of her retirement!

Services will be held on Monday, December 11, at 1:00pm at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, friends and family are invited to visit 12:00-12:45pm prior to the service. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
