Bonnie Jean Moesser Winterton

 

Bonnie Jean Moesser Winterton, a prominent musician and church worker, died July 28, 2021.   Born March 22, 1930 in Thayne, Wyoming to Franklin William and Mae Wolfley Moesser.  She graduated from Brigham Young University where she was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and was voted “Belle of the Y” in 1951.  She later earned a Masters Degree in Choral Conducting (the first woman to receive a Masters Degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Utah) and a Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Utah where she was a member of the music department faculty for 27 years from 1973 to 2000.  She also maintained a private piano studio in her home.

 

She married Boyd “W” Winterton in the Idaho Falls, Idaho Temple on August 15, 1951.  They are the parents of six children:  Vern, Ann, Dale, Reed, Jean and Paul.  She is also survived by 27 grandchildren, all of whom she adored, and 32 great grandchildren.

 

A gifted musician, she served in many church and community musical positions.  She was the principal accompanist and assistant conductor of the Utah Symphony Chorus for 27 years and 17 years respectively.  She also conducted the South Davis Community Choir for 5 years and conducted many choruses for General Conference, Women’s Conferences and other general LDS church satellite broadcasts.

 

Reflecting a life of steadfastness in Christ, Bonnie served in church positions in the LDS church all her life, including the Young Women General Board and the Primary General Board where she served as chairman of the music committee.  She and her husband, Boyd, served together on the General Church Music Committee for 5 years in charge of choirs singing in General Conference for the LDS church.  They also served together for 10 years on the Temple Square Concert Committee.

 

In 1999, Dr. Winterton was selected as one of ten outstanding Alumni of Brigham Young University.   She was honored to be a member of the Emeriti Club of the University of Utah where she served as Vice President for 2 years.  Bonnie was a happy member of the Salt Lake Piano Club.

 

Bonnie loved people, especially children.  A champion for the cause of music, she possessed a thirst for knowledge and loved to learn and teach others.   She believed in the power of positive thinking and exhibited a perfect brightness of hope in her life.

 

Funeral Services:  Friday, August 6, 2021 in the Stake Center located at 3103 East Craig Drive at 12:00 noon. There will be no viewings preceding the funeral service. Interment will be in the Charleston, Utah cemetery.  (CDC and local health guidelines to be followed at the services.)
