Byron Hoen Engh, Major, United State Air Force, retired. 1928 ~ 2023

Byron H. Engh, age 94, passed away peacefully at Bee Hive Homes of Salt Lake on 5 May, 2023. He was born 26 September, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Anna Kirstine Fjerdingstad and Arnt Engh. He graduated from South High School, class of 1946. In 1950 he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Political Science. On 19 February, 1951 he married Dorothy Gene Paul in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. She passed away the day before their 57th Wedding Anniversary.

Byron was an officer in the United States Air Force for 24 years. He is a veteran of the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Cold War.  He first trained as a navigator, but later transitioned to defense intelligence.

During the first 20 years of their marriage Byron and Dorothy moved approximately 21 times. They lived in locations such as, Denver, Colorado; Washington, D.C.; Shreveport, Louisiana; Houston Texas; Montgomery, Alabama; and London, England.

After his retirement from the air force in 1971, Byron worked for Mutual of New York (MONY) insurance company until 2001.

Byron was active in the LDS church. During the course of his life he served in a variety of church positions, including the branch presidency in Alabama, and most often as a teacher in the Sunday school and Priesthood organizations.

Byron will be remembered for his love history, music, military history and his love of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He was a great story teller and was known for his ability to remember facts and details about family history, religious history and military history. He was also famous for his “sweep the floor” soup. 

Byron was an active member of the Military Order of World Wars (MOWW) where he served for a time as the chapter president.  He also played an important role in helping establish Utah’s first veterans cemetery at Camp Williams.

He is survived by his five children, Randy (Valerie), Howard (Cynthia), Sandra, Edward and Debora (Stephen), 14 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and several loving nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held Friday, 12 May, from to 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 S. 2300 E., Salt Lake City, UT 84109.

A  2nd viewing will be held Saturday morning, 13 May, from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the Salt Lake Valley View Stake Center, 2245 East 3900 South, Salt Lake City, UT. Funeral services will be held after the viewing at 11:00 a.m.

Interment will be at Wasatch Lawn, 3402 South, Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84106

The family would like to express appreciation to the staff of Bee Hive Homes of Salt Lake and the staff of Charter Health Care for the kind and compassionate service provided to Byron.
