Charles Quilter Obituary

Charles Harry Quilter was born in Henrieville, Utah on July 10, 1927 to Alfred Powell Quilter and Vera Hales. His family moved to Salt Lake City in 1937. Charles graduated from West High and received his BA degree in Fine Arts from the University of Utah. After graduation, he entered the US Army and was stationed at Beaumont General Hospital in El Paso, Texas as a part of the entertainment unit where he drew posters and event advertisements.

Charles was a talented artist. He worked for the Newspaper Agency Corporation for many years as a commercial artist making maps and illustrations, retiring in 1992. He also did freelance work for several organizations which included The Friend Magazine and Lagoon Corporation. He was always willing to share his artistic abilities with others.

Charles was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all his life. He's served a full-time mission in the Hawaiian Islands and even learned to speak the native Hawaiian language. He married LaRue Griffiths in the Salt Lake Temple on June 7, 1967. Together, they raised their wonderful children - Laurel, Brian and Cynthia Sue. He served in the Church in many callings ranging from Nursery teacher to counselor in the Bishopric. In 2002, Charles and his wife, LaRue, went on a couple mission for the Church in the Florida Tallahassee Mission. He served as a temple worker in the Salt Lake Temple for 7 years and did a service mission as a host at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building for 6 years. He always loved sharing his testimony about the restored gospel and love for the church.

He enjoyed the outdoors and often took his family hiking and went on many backpacking trips with his son, Brian. They were especially fond of backpacking in the Wind River Mountains in Wyoming.

His enthusiasm and love for life will be greatly missed. But those who loved him know he has just commenced on to the next great adventure where he is reunited with those family members and friends who passed beyond the veil before him.

He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, LaRue; his 3 children and their spouses:  Laurel Vance (Michael), Brian Quilter (Carlene), Cynthia Sue Cagle (Robie); 5 grandchildren: CJ (Irene), Holly, Rachel, Jacob and Samantha; 2 sisters - Verla Hagen and JoAnn Callahan.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Karl.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Summit Hospice Care Givers, Chantel and Giancarlo for the loving care they gave Charles.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, November 1st, in the Canyon Rim Stake Center - 3051 South 2900 East; where a viewing will be held prior to services from 9:30 am - 10:30 am.
