It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved, Erna M. Weldon, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, who has returned home to our Heavenly Father, where she joined her loved ones on the other side, what a reunion that must have been! She passed on November 30, 2022 in Salt Lake City, UT at the age of 91, after complications from COVID.
On June 12, 2017 she suffered a double massive stroke which left her pretty immobile on her right side, although she was bound to a wheelchair, she constantly forced herself to do everything and anything she could. She lived her last 5 1/2 years in several care centers. We appreciate the care provided by the medical and personnel staff at Beehive Homes, for their loving care. She loved her visits from family and friends, as well as looking at pictures and videos of her grandchildren, and great-grandchildren! She would often take the phone away so she could keep swiping through the pictures at her leisure, it seemed she could not get enough of them, it brought her so much joy!
Erna was born on May 7, 1931 to Gottfried and Ida Moesching in Stoechen, (Saanen) Canton Bern, Switzerland. She was fourth of eight siblings: Margrith (Greti), Robert, Heinrich, Erna, Willi, Bertha (Berti), Werner, and Walter.
She was introduced to Leon E. Weldon, and was later married, they were married and sealed on June 29, 1965 in the Salt Lake Temple.
She had many hobbies but her favorites were baking Swiss treats and breads, and eating Swiss chocolates, knitting, sewing, photography, doing anything outdoors, skiing (which she taught all of us to do) hiking, taking long walks, gardening, if you knew her you knew she had the greenest thumb. She also loved serving others, being with friends, family and relatives from Kansas and Switzerland. Her favorite movie was Sound of Music, as you can understand, it was her life in many ways; from the scenery, the handsome widower, and six amazing children she married into, having come from a large family having a couple more was a given for her, essentially it was her life on film in so many ways, not to mention a classic.
Among her accomplishments were her marriage, her children, six were from Leon’s previous marriage after losing his wife, they also had two more together. She knew five languages, and served an Italian speaking mission in Switzerland in 2005. She also served in many church callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the ward she lived in since her marriage. She belonged to the Swiss Choir Edelweiss performing, dancing and singing in many events throughout the years. She also assisted in teaching the blind for several years. She was tender and loving and ready to listen and serve at any time. She was generous with her means and time. She loved her Savior, family, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. She emulated the essence of His teachings in all that she did. While she found enjoyment in many activities throughout her life, none interested her so much as raising a good family and being around them. Her legacy lives on in the goodness of her examples, and the lives she touched, her laughter and caring spirit will be missed.
Erna is comforted in death by her parents Gottfried & Ida, husband Leon, son Thomas, and six of her sibling’s and is survived by one of her brothers Walter, her children and their spouses: Rod (Crystal); Colleen (Terry); Teresa, Mary Jane (Rick); Jeff (Jamie); Connie Kay (Mario); Bernhard (Jennifer); 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren.
Families will receive their guests at a closed casket visitation where family, relatives, and friends can share stories and memories and enjoy each other’s company on Saturday, December 17th from 12:00-2:00p.m. at the LDS Canyon Rim Relief Society Room on 3000 S. 3100 E. Salt Lake City, UT. Graveside service will begin at 2:30 at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 E. 4580 S. Millcreek, UT.
