Evelyn Lewis Obituary

In the early morning hours of Sunday, August 21, 2022, our beloved mother, grandmother, and great grandmother Evelyn Madeline Lewis passed away. She had recently celebrated her 92nd birthday.

Madeline was born on July 21, 1930, in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, to Marvin and Nellie Ogle. She was always a true southern girl at heart, but alongside her husband, Luman D.(Bill) Lewis, who served as a Chief Master Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, Madeline created a home in many places. These included Germany, Holland, Michigan, Montana, Texas, and Louisiana. They retired in Bossier City, Louisiana, and subsequently moved to Orem, Utah, almost 20 years ago. She passed at The Charleston in Cedar Hills, Utah.

She is survived by three of her five children: G. Franklin Lewis (Christie), Janie Shumway (Randal), and Brad Lewis (Alair), as well as 20 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. The love of her life, Luman D. (Bill) Lewis, passed away 5 years ago. They were married 69 years. It was a heartache to lose two of her children in these last 5 years as well: Martin Lewis (Peggy Jo) and Brenda Bichon (Ed).

Madeline joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a newlywed and was a valiant member all her adult life. She strengthened wards and branches wherever she lived with her great love of the gospel, kindness to all, and generous hospitality. In her later years she diligently learned new computer skills as she typed up hundreds of patriarchal blessings given by her stake patriarch husband.

The military life she shared with Bill was also a hallmark of her life. Wonderful friendships were made and sustained. She showed great strength in holding her family together during the many military deployments.

Madeline will be honored and remembered for many wonderful attributes and talents. She loved to fish and eat fish. She also loved to cook and served up many a southern fish fry and the occasional crawfish and shrimp boil. She enjoyed sewing for her girls, making quilts for all the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was a good sport about doing almost anything that involved family. She took her first-ever swim in her 70s in Lake Powell and went sledding at Rock Canyon and camping on the back porch with her grandkids in her 80s. Even as her health declined, she continued to delight us all with her fun sense of humor, clever quips, sayings, and heartfelt insights into life. She was a living testimony of Jesus Christ. More than anything she will be remembered for the service she gave and the great love she had for all of us, her family and friends, who will miss her dearly.

Services will be held on Friday, August 26, 2022 at the LDS Chapel at 165 N 100 E in Alpine, Utah. Visitation will be from 10:45 - 11:15 with the funeral services at 11:30.  Burial will follow at 1:30 at the Utah Veterans Cemetery at 17111 1700 West in Bluffdale, Utah.

In lieu of flowers, Madeline would be delighted if you considered a donation in her honor to the humanitarian aid arm of Latter-day Saint Charities or your local animal shelter.

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
