Our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Grant Emerson Head, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 29, 2025, in Murray, Utah, surrounded by family.
Grant was born on February 25, 1939, in Cardston, Alberta, Canada, to Nephi Lawrence Head and Ireta Alder Cahoon Head, the youngest of four children with older siblings Helen, Lawrence, and Kitchener. When he was eight years old, the family moved to Sandy, Utah. Grant’s childhood was marked by curiosity, determination, and a deep love for learning, qualities that defined him throughout his life.
Grant finished high school a year early and attended the University of Utah, earning a bachelor’s degree in Engineering. He later received a master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. While attending Stanford, his roommate offered to set him up with his sister. And fortunately he agreed. Grant met Carolyn Callister of Salt Lake City in December, 1965, on a blind date. It must have gone well, because in 1966, Grant proposed via ham radio during their weekly call from Stanford to Salt Lake City. After having him repeat the question, she said “yes”. They continued the long distance relationship until they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 22, 1967, by Elder Gordon B. Hinckley. Their faith, devotion, and partnership were the center of his life.
Grant's professional career was spent largely at Hewlett-Packard, where he delighted in work that aligned perfectly with his love for technology and computers. He retired in 2001.
As a devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, Grant served a 30-month mission in the Swiss-Austrian Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he was 19 years old, where he developed a lasting love for the German language and the people he served.
Grant had many interests that brought richness and connection to his life. He was a dedicated ham radio operator with the call sign W7CCP, a hobby that allowed him to reach people across the world. He was a lifelong student and spent the past decade studying Spanish. In 2021, Grant and Carolyn served a 2-year mission in a Spanish-speaking ward in West Valley, Utah, an experience they treasured.
One of Grant’s greatest sources of spiritual fulfillment came from his years of service as a temple worker in both the Oakland California Temple and later the Salt Lake Temple for a total of 23 years. His gentle devotion and steady faith blessed many.
Grant lived a life grounded in faith, family, learning, and kindness. His example will continue to influence his posterity, and the memory of his thoughtful, steady presence will be cherished forever.
Grant is survived by his sweetheart, Carolyn, and their five children, who were his greatest joy: Karen (Stephen) Hutchins, Melinda (Geoff) Smith, Michelle (Tom) Lynch, Brian (Mia) Head, and Amy (Jeff) Jensen. He is also survived by fourteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way.
He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2025 at 12:00 Noon at the East Millcreek 5th Ward house on 3750 South Hillside Lane, Millcreek, Utah. A viewing will begin prior to the services from 10:00 – 11:45 AM.
