Janis Frederickson Obituary

Janis Frederickson

June 26, 1945 - December 29, 2023

Our dear mother, Jan, after many years battling a heart condition, departed from this earth on December 29th at the age of 78, but we know she's still spreading her vibrant energy wherever she goes.

When our mother was born to Paul Frederickson and Dorothy Quayle in Salt Lake City in the early morning hours of June 26, 1945, she brightened up the world with her unique personality. Jan was proud to tell people she attended Highland High School from 7th to 12th grade and that her father helped lay the bricks when the school was built.

She was a free spirit who believed in living life on her own terms. She loved to have fun without any restrictions, and she was not afraid to question the status quo. She was passionate about the universe and believed that it was the perfect force to guide us all. She loved people and especially cherished spending time with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren. She was a skilled cosmetologist and had a natural talent for hairstyling. In fact, she knew how to cut hair even at the age of twelve when she gave her little sister’s long, gorgeous black hair a new haircut. Although her parents were horrified, Jan was proud of her rebellious behavior. She loved being creative with her medium brown hair, but she was also excited about getting gray hair as she grew older. She loved to showcase different clothing styles and was eccentric with her bold appearance. Jan loved her home – “the duplex” – on Fairview Avenue where she raised her young family, did hair for so many people, and where she lovingly cared for her own mother until she passed, surrounded by family, in 1993. After working as a hairstylist for many years, Jan decided to pursue a new career and became passionate about counseling individuals dealing with addiction and substance use. She loved helping people, and she was good at it too. Many people have been blessed by Jan’s ability to listen, love, and guide them through difficult times and the messiness of this wonderful world.

Jan was married to Lee Rudd from 1964 to 1977, and they had three remarkable children - Glen (New York City), Jonathan (Salt Lake City), Samuel and his wife Susanna (Las Vegas). Jan was married to Richard Wood (deceased 2022) from 1980 to 1989 and to Tom Jensen (deceased 2020) from 2006 to 2020.

Jan was also blessed with nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, all of whom lovingly knew her as “Granny Janny.”

She will be greatly missed by her children and grandchildren, her four siblings, Ron (Jymme), Darl (Reid), Becky (Craig), Steve (Wanda), her nephews and nieces, and her many lifelong friends.

As per our mother’s request, we'll be celebrating her life at Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, Millcreek, UT 84109, on Friday, January 5, 2024, at 12:00 pm. We want to celebrate her life knowing that she's free from the physical pain she endured during her later years and that she is dancing with her parents and loved ones on the other side. In a note she left on her phone about her wishes for this celebration, she wrote, “BE GLAD, BE SAD, FEEL ALL OF IT!” Please join us in remembering the joy she brought us all and celebrating the wonderful life of our dear mother, faithful confidant, and cherished friend, Jan. Comfortable attire is welcome – Mom was always colorful!

Friends and family have shared their relationship to show their support.
