Mary Janice Bracken Steele, age 90, passed away on May 31, 2024, in Salt Lake City. Her passing was quick and peaceful. She was born on March 25, 1934, in Nephi, Utah to Rulon Bracken and Tacy Irons. On September 8, 1961, she married Hugh Steele in the Salt Lake Temple.
Mary graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Utah in 1956. Shortly afterwards, she served as a health missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the American Samoa Mission for over two years from 1957 to 1959.
As a nurse, Mary worked in public health. She enjoyed family vacations in the motorhome and abroad with Hugh in retirement. Visiting Lake Powell multiple times per year was a family favorite. She served as a temple ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple for ten years. Mary and Hugh also served a mission together in the Virginia Richmond mission for 18 months.
Mary is survived by her children, Daniel (Melisa), Cindy, Alicia, stepson Edward (Judy) and twelve grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Hugh in 2006, and her siblings Newell, Dwain and Glenna.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 10, 2024, at 12:00 p.m. at the Olympus Stake Center, located at 2675 East 4430 South, Holladay, UT. Viewing services will be on Sunday, June 9, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and then again on Monday, June 10 from 11:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Vine Bluff Cemetery, 1200 North 400 East, Nephi, UT.
