Michael “Mike” Allen Harris, 80, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2024, with his family by his side. In his final weeks, he shared cherished memories and received constant loving care for a chronic illness.
Born on August 14, 1943, in Ogden, Utah, Mike grew up in Murray and graduated from Murray High School. As a builder and carpenter, his hands crafted countless projects across the state, including freeway systems, the Kennecott Smelter, the Deseret Power Plant, and even the kitchen cabinets many use today.
Mike’s life was a testament to success through positivity, hard work, laughter, and love. He exemplified simple living and kindness, embodying the spirit of a gentle soul and salt-of-the-earth man. He modeled a life where you thoroughly enjoy simple things and want nothing more than what is right in front of you. He pursued his hobbies and interests with passion, even amidst solitude. He was a steadfast presence, always giving his best to his family.
Mike had a passion for country western music and old westerns. His many hobbies included painting, fishing, camping, gold mining, dancing, playing poker, gardening, reading science fiction novels, and woodworking. He spent many winters in the Arizona desert mining for gold as a Lost Dutchman's Mining Association club member, where he made friends, played poker, and fed the roadrunners, birds, and bunnies. He loved animals, especially his Pomeranian, Pee Pee.
Mike is survived by his four daughters: Gina Gonzalez of Morgan, Dawn Kearl (Rod) of Millcreek, Angie Newson (James) of Magna, and Christina Gallegos of Daytona Beach, Florida, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a loving father, grandfather, and good friend to all who knew him. He is predeceased by his parents, William and Martha Harris, his siblings, and his eldest son, Michael David Harris.
Honoring his wishes, Mike will be cremated, and his ashes will be spread near his favorite retreats in the Uinta Mountains. A private celebration of life will be announced in the coming weeks. Those who would like to attend and those who wish to share condolences and memories of Mike are asked to email ldmamike@gmail.com.
