Patricia Smith Obituary

Patricia Elizabeth Hamlin Smith passed away peacefully, Saturday May 6, 2023, to be reunited with the Ripper and her son Richard.

Pat was born October 24, 1933 in San Francisco CA., to parents Lester Orson Hamlin and Eleanor Dorothy Chamberlain Hamlin.

She was excited to be turning 90 years old this October, so we celebrated her 90th birthday a few days before she passed.

Pat had one younger sister Vicki, who was her best friend. They lived by each other in their married lives and raised their children together.

Pat and Vicki grew up in the avenues of SLC and lived on G street.

Pat attended BYU and became a Nurse’s Assistant to Doctors Kimball, Riser and Romney. One of her claims to fame was, she gave shots to the Apostles and the newly called missionaries.

She met our dad Rip (Adrian) in 1957 at a church dance. They were married June 12, 1958, in the SLC Temple. Another claim to fame for her, was that they were married by Elder Spencer W. Kimball.

Pat and Rip had 4 children and raised them in the Canyon Rim area.

The “lights” of her life were her children, Kellie, Connie and Shawn.

She loved having her kid’s friends come over for popcorn and Orange Julius’ on Saturday nights.

The “brighter lights” of her life were her grandchildren Heather, Jeff, Jill, Eddy (Brent), Stacey, Megan, Michelle, Adrian and Julian. She loved holidays. Halloween was her favorite and she would fabulously decorate her home for them.  Along with her great holiday dinners.

The Cherry on Top were her 19 great-grandchildren. In her garden she would grow huge pumpkins for them, which they loved.

Pat and Rip served two Inner City Missions and served three years as Service Missionaries in a rest home. Pat thrived and loved every minute. Another claim to fame was President Thomas S. Monson would come to visit this rest home often, as his mother was there many years before and it brought him great memoires being there.

For years, Pat and Rip put on the greatest Empty Nesters. Rip got the speakers and Pat decorated the tables. Everyone always had the best time. We are sure Rip now has gotten fabulous speakers up in heaven and has been waiting for Pat to come and decorate the tables.

Pat loved being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She served in many callings throughout her life. She loved being a member of the Daughter’s of Utah Pioneers, but her very favorite hobby was “Cards on Monday” with her card bunch from the neighborhood and Ward. They played for over 40 years. We are so glad nothing horrible happened to one of us on Mondays, because she would have chosen cards over us and dealt with it later. Nothing got in the way of her card playing.  We are not joking!

Pat is survived by three children, Kellie Schwendiman (Scot), Connie Windley (Chuck) and Shawn H. Smith. Her 9 grand children and 19 great-grandchildren. Her sister Vicki Williams and sisters-in-law Adele Smith and Wanda LaValle. Also, many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.

She was proceeded in death by her parents Les and Dorothy, her husband Rip, son Richard, many brothers in-law and sisters-in law and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to her friends and helpers at Olympus Ranch Retirement Living and Truewood Cottonwood Heights. Also, a special thanks to Rhonda and Jennifer and to her Canyon Hospice team, Dr. D. Yarrish, Erika N., Ruth M., Joann H., Tammy B., and Ruth Z.
