Richard Buchi Obituary

Richard Hall Buchi was born on April 29, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was the 2nd son of John William and Ivy Hall Buchi. He graduated from Olympus High School in 1960 and continued his studies at the University of Utah. Richard served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North British Mission from June 1962 to June 1964. Richard had a passion for landscaping, which allowed him to support himself through college. Richard met his wife, Patsy, after an Institute dance at the University of Utah while participating in a playful act of toilet papering. They dated for two years before marrying on August 18, 1966, in the Salt Lake Temple.  Together they welcomed and raised three children: Richard Paul, John Eric, and Janice Marie. He earned a degree in Chemistry in 1968. Following his graduation, he spent 40 years working  as a chemist at Hill Air Force Base.

He had a deep faith and commitment to service. This was reflected in the numerous church callings he held throughout his life. At the age of 28, he was ordained a seventy and later became one of the Presidents of the Seventies. He also served as a High Priest and held various counselor positions. Richard had a particular affinity for teaching children, serving as both a Sunday School and Primary teacher and serving as a Den Leader and also a Webelos Leader. Additionally, he was a Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster for six years and remained active in the Young Men’s program. Together with his wife Patsy, he served as Temple Worker during the first five years following the opening of the Bountiful Temple. They later served as Ward Missionaries in the Bountiful Second Ward.

Richard enjoyed his time working at the Utah State Capitol as a “Sergeant at Arms” (Green Coat). He spent 10 years doing this and enjoyed what he learned and rubbed shoulders with many great people he respected.

He loved to spend his time working in the yard, planting flowers and making the yard beautiful. Before he was too busy taking care of things around the home he loved reading a good book. In his early years he would be found snow skiing in the winter, and  water skiing in the summer. He enjoyed spending time with his family in the great outdoors. And most of all his desire to beat any one in any card or board game was the highlight of his week.

Richard passed away on November 9, 2024. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the staff at Elevation and Fairfield Village for their compassionate care during his final months. He has been reunited with his son, John Eric and brother (Jack) and parents (W. John & Ivy) who preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Patsy; son, Paul; daughter, Janice (Steven Burke); grandchildren Micah John Buchi, Hayden Scott Buchi (Kaitlyn), Harrison Carter Buchi, Bailey Buchi, Brandon Douglas Burke(Kelsie), Taylor Steven Burke (Tegan), Mitchell Reed Burke (Jaidin), and Janelle Marie Rowley (Kade); as well as great-grandchildren Dallas, Evie, Everett, Tate, Jack, and Natalie.

We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff at Elevation Hospice who cared so much for Richard, especially Lexie Teerlink, Angie Lebaron, and Lisa Thomas.
