Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Thomas Russon Baird, passed away Monday, January 20, 2025, at the age of 70. His departure came far too soon, leaving an unfillable void in the lives of those who love him.
Tom was born on June 8, 1954, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Merritt Marshall “Samm” Baird and Alene Russon. Tom was a twin brother to Charlie, the second set of twins born to the family 17 years apart.
Tom attended East High School in Salt Lake City and graduated in 1973. He worked diligently to save money in preparation for church missionary service. He was called to serve in the New Zealand North Mission. His missionary service had a profound and transformative impact on his life, and he spoke of it often with gratitude and joy.
Upon returning from New Zealand in January 1976, Tom met the love of his life, Susan Horrocks. The two were sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple on June 28, 1976. Together, they were blessed with five children, thirteen grandchildren, and one great-grandson.
His greatest joy in life came from being a husband, father, and grandfather. He adored spending time with Su. Whether enjoying life’s simple pleasures or traveling to new destinations, he always wanted her by his side. He loved supporting his children in whatever sport they were in, often stepping into the role of coach. He was his children’s biggest fan and never missed an opportunity to cheer them on. “Coach Baird” became more than a title; he was a mentor and cheerleader to many.
Tom was just as passionate about his own athletic pursuits. He loved watching, studying, practicing, and competing in tennis and played three times a week until the end. He cherished his relationships with his coaches and those with whom he played.
Professionally, Tom excelled as a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant, working closely with clients who often became lifelong friends. His remarkable ability to connect with people was a hallmark of both his career and personal life.
A man of deep faith, Tom had a profound love for his Savior, Jesus Christ. He spent his life always trying to be better, serve better, and love better. He served in the bishopric in the mid-singles ward for three years and it taught him the power of the Atonement and deepened his empathy and compassion. We all saw his ability to love, forgive, and support increase during this time.
Tom leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and service that will endure in the hearts of his family and friends. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, a proud father, a doting grandfather, and a trusted friend. His presence will be deeply missed, but his influence will continue to inspire those who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Merritt “Samm” Marshall Baird, his mother Alene Russon Lanphere, his stepfather Forrest “Buck” Edward Lanphere, his father-in-law Jay B. Horrocks, and his brothers Marshall David and Merrill Frederick Baird.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan. His loyal twin brother Charlie and Babs Baird. His children Jonathan and Melissa Baird, Melissa and Kelton Busby, Jeffrey and Heather Baird, Megan and Trevor Gasser, and Travis Baird. His grandchildren Bailey, Chase, Logan, Aspen, Creede, Ty, Delilah, Rye, Rylee, London, Kai, Elliston, Jude, and great-grandson Ryker.
