Vern Boyd Winterton died of natural causes on September 23, 2024, at the age of 71. Vern was born September 30, 1952, in Ogden, Utah. He was the first child of Boyd W. and Bonnie M. Winterton. He grew up in Holladay, Utah, where he graduated from Skyline High School. Vern attended the University of Utah, but before graduating, he enlisted in the United States Navy to serve his country in Vietnam. He served in the Naval Supply Corp, wherein he was responsible for maintaining the electronics of defensive weaponry on an ammunition supply ship in the Gulf of Tonkin. Vern was always proud to have been of service to his country as a Vietnam Veteran.
Throughout his life, Vern continued to be a living example of service to his immediate family. He was a loving Uncle who loved to feed and care for his many nieces and nephews, always with a big, welcoming smile as they came through the door. He always inquired about their school studies and encouraged them to do their very best. Vern was adored by all his nieces and nephews, who have shared many stories of his patience, care, and loving interest in their lives.
But his greatest strength was revealed as he cared for his father and mother in their later years. As their needs grew greater, Vern’s extraordinary ability to love and serve his fellow man came to the forefront. No task was too big or onerous for him as he tenderly cared for his parents. Our entire family wishes to pay tribute to Vern as he proved himself to be the very best of sons. He was truly an example of selfless love as he attended to every need of our parents. We know his Eternal Father has welcomed him home with open arms. Each member of our family considered him to have been a living angel here on earth. He will be missed.
Vern faced many challenges throughout his life but met each difficulty to the very best of his ability. Vern’s life was also a living example of sincere expressions of gratitude. Vern never forgot to look people in the eye and humbly thank them for their services. Vern’s family members feel honored to have known Vern as he strove each day to do and be his very best. No one could ask for more. The Winterton family would like to express our deep gratitude to the medical teams at the VA Hospital who served Vern with dedicated care and attention.
Vern is survived by his brothers and sisters, Ann, Dale, Reed, Jean, and Paul, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Boyd W. Winterton and Bonnie M. Winterton.
