Vernal Tribe Obituary

Vernal David Tribe, 85, passed away peacefully in his Layton home on Monday, September 30, 2024, due to complications from a stroke.

Vern was born in Westwood, California on June 14, 1939, the youngest of three children of Wesley James Tribe and Susan Hannah Huit Taylor Tribe.  He moved as a child to Utah where he was raised in Ogden. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1957.  Shortly thereafter he served in the France Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  Following graduation and completion of his mission, while working at Southeast Furniture Company in Sugarhouse, Vern met his eternal companion, Nancy Dayle Sudweeks.  They were married in the Logan Temple on May 16, 1963. Vern and Nancy lived in the Sugarhouse area of Salt Lake City, Utah for 48 years.  During that time Vern was a dedicated employee for the State of Utah, Department of Health and Human Services for over 30 years.  After retirement he served with his wife in the office of the Florida Orlando Mission from 2001-2003. In 2017, Vern and Nancy moved to their home in Holladay, Utah, where they resided together until Nancy’s passing in 2022.  He remained in his Holladay home until April of this year, when he moved to Layton with family members.

Vern was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served in many capacities throughout the years. In addition to his missions he also notably served as a temple worker in the Salt Lake Temple, stake seventies president, and a stake high councilman in the Salt Lake Highland Stake.  In addition to his church service, Vern also served his country as a member of the Utah Army National Guard Reserves.  Throughout his life, Vern enjoyed spending time with family, especially playing games.  He enjoyed watching Utah Jazz basketball among other sporting events.  Listening to music and singing in the church choir were also some of his favorite past-times.  If you ever spent time around him, you likely found yourself humming “The Farmer in the Dell” thanks to his infectious whistling. In his later years, he enjoyed playing weekly card games with his friends from the Imperial 1st Ward.

Vern is survived by his children, Mike (Marci) Tribe, Lisa (Cris) Myers, Doug (Sherry) Tribe, and Kathi (Rob) Jensen; seventeen grandchildren; and fourteen, soon-to-be fifteen great-grandchildren; as well as his sister, Dorothy (John) Robbins.  He is preceded in death by his wife, his sister Barbara (Cecil) Child, and one great-grandson.
