Our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend was welcomed into the arms of our Heavenly Father on May 15, 2016.  His wife Thelma of 56 years was by his side.  Duane was born April 12, 1934 to Benjamin George Slaugh and Birdie Ross Rooks Slaugh.  He was raised in Vernal, Utah along with 13 siblings. After graduating from Vernal High School, Duane went to Utah State University on a basketball scholarship.  His studies were interrupted by war.  He served in the U.S. Army for two years and returned to Utah State to complete his degree in Business. Duane married Thelma Shakespeare on December 17, 1959.  Their marriage was later solemnized in the St. George Temple.

Duane is survived by his wife Thelma, his three children Kellie (Matthew), Kirk, Brad (Tracy), five grandchildren, Andrew and Alton Janes, Grete, John-David and Sofia Slaugh, one great granddaughter Alana Janes, two brothers Daniel (Rayma) and Morgan (Judy) Slaugh, former daughter-in-law, Dorothy Strehl, and his numerous extended Slaugh and Shakespeare families and friends.

Duane was hired by Ray Jennings of Utah Agency, starting a long career in Insurance.  Ray became a mentor and dear friend and Duane eventually became president of Utah Agency. Over the years, Duane made it possible for his key workers to buy into the business.  Duane received many awards in the insurance industry and was recognized for his dedication to his clients.  He always had fond memories of his fellow workers and enjoyed his work.   Duane had a close business association with Valley Bank of Utah and Pete Harman of Harman's Kentucky Fried Chicken.  Some of his fondest personal relationships were formed from these associations, and his fondest memories were spent in association with the Harman family.

Duane loved this wonderful world Heavenly Father created for us.  He loved the sky, the earth, and the waters.  He never forgot his humble childhood growing up on a farm close to the Green River with views of the Uinta Mountains. Duane loved spending weekends at the family cabin.  He had a love of all sports.  Throughout his life he played many games of rook.  He enjoyed the neighborhood children, Monday morning breakfast with his insurance buddies, and the waitresses at CJ's who listened to his jokes.

The family would also like to thank IHC Home Health and Hospice and Duane’s primary care physician Dr. King Udall.

Duane was a member of the LDS church.  His funeral services will be held Saturday, May 21, 2016 at 2:00 pm at his ward chapel, 2702 East Evergreen Avenue with a viewing from noon to 1:30 pm prior to the service.  Interment will follow at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park at 3:30 pm, 3401 South Highland Drive in Salt Lake City, Utah. In lieu of flowers, please support the Utah Food Bank or a charity of choice.
