Ruth was born on June 12, 1924, in St Anthony, Idaho, to Sara and Ray Stone. She is preceded in death by her husband, Paul Cairns Lyon, Jr., her parents Sara and Ray Stone, her brother David Stone, and her sister Mary Lou Romney.  She lived in St Anthony until she was about 6 years old, then her family moved to Salt Lake, where she was educated.  She graduated from the University of Utah in 1945, with high honors.  She majored in Speech, and minored in English. She acted in some short plays, performed for the soldiers at Camp Williams, and provided entertainment at a few local functions. She liked to tell a joke, and gave many humorous readings. While on campus she affiliated with Lambda Delta Sigma, an LDS sorority.  She was president of the Psi chapter.  After graduating, she taught 8th graders for two years. She married Paul Cairns Lyon, Jr. in the Salt Lake Temple, November 2, 1946. They were blessed with four children, Raylene Lyon, Sylva Christenson (Robert Christenson), Paul C Lyon III (Inna Lyon), and Lowell Edgar Lyon (Linda Gidley). They have 17 grandchildren and 27 Great-grandchildren.

When her children were out of grade school, Ruth went back to the University of Utah and obtained a Master’s Degree in secondary education, plus a Counseling Certificate.  She taught at Granite Jr. High for two years, and then had the opportunity to teach at the University of Utah.  She taught for 23 years as a reading specialist/learning skills counselor.  Her student evaluation forms always rated her as an excellent, dynamic and inspiring teacher/counselor.

Ruth was always active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She taught for the Relief Society and Sunday school, and she was a Primary president.  In her later life she and her husband accepted a call to serve in the Salt Lake Temple as ordinance workers. She served faithfully for ten years, and then retired due to health concerns.

Ruth will be remembered as an upbeat, warm, friendly and caring person.  She dearly loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Their welfare was always her first concern.  She nurtured them with love and sacrifice, and played an important role in their lives.  She will be greatly missed.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Tuesday February 7, 2017 at the Valley View 8th Ward, 4395 South Albright Drive.
