I knew Elaine at ASU in 1962. We dated occasionally. I was a student athlete (football) from Pennsylvania and was pretty homesick. Elaine was so kind and caring she helped me acclimate to ASU. She was a wholesome gentle spirit. She seemed to be the personification of God's spirit. I loved her dearly as a fellow Christian. I can't wait to see her again in heaven.

Elaine and Jerry, you were both kind and gentle friends when we had the chance to know you. Jerry, I am so sorry for the loss you face and Nancy and I mourn the loss of Elaine. During a period of crisis you opened your home to Nancy and our daughter. We will never forget.

Peace

Dear Jerry and Family,
Our 43 years and counting, bind us to inseparably to the Petersen family. Few people could match Elaine for her many talents, and for her willingness to share those gifts with others. Jerry and I worked for the same company. Every other year the families would come along on a sales management meeting. Elaine would organize all of the children to provide some type of entertainment. It was always a smash hit. We have so many great memories. She could do anything. For example, I confessed that I had never learned how to whistle like a cowboy. Well Elaine not only could whistle like a cowboy, she showed me how to do it. Yes, Elaine was and is a very special woman.

Elaine worked with me at Salt Lake Head Start as one of her Externships. She worked effectively with preschool children and was able to involve parents in their child's therapy. She was an excellent therapist and I'm grateful to have known her as a friend.

Random thoughts and memories of visits to the Petersen's:
Struggling to hit the F in quartet rehearsals with Elaine at the piano.
Being taught instead when we came to home teach in a warm and welcoming home
Gazing from the bay window over all the earth
Sifting through the antiques and artifacts of Jerry's museum and medal room
Admiring the walls of award-worthy water-colors
Hearing both modesty and delight in the recounting of tales of kids and grandkids
Watching the clutter of the dining room table turn into a tribute to 50 years of married life and love
Elaine's courageously speaking wisdom and singing beauty with less than full voice
Marveling at the resilience of living out of a suitcase so many times on so many ships on so many seas
Mulling over provocative questions from two who thought deeply about this world and cared more deeply about its people
Seeing pain born privately as if there were none
Wondering if there could be a more gracious, cheerful, competent, pleasant hostess with a warmer smile
If the purpose of life is to respond to experiences and challenges in such a way as to become a God-like person, Elaine has reached her goal.
God bless Elaine and Jerry and all Petersen's.

Elaine was a classmate of mine at Mesa High School. We graduated together and performed in the Rabbettes together. She was as sweet and beautiful then as she is now. The world has truly lost a beautiful soul. Thank you for sharing her many accomplishments. Charlie and Lesa are in my ward and I was shocked to hear of her passing. Please accept my heartfelt love.

Dear Brian and entire family,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I remember your mom and always liked her. I'm glad you wrote such a full story about her life so we could get a glimpse of what her time on earth was like and how she contributed in so many ways. She touched so many people that I am sure she will be remembered by so many people you don't even know. May you be comforted by your warm memories. Sending many warm hugs to you and your entire family. Love, Sandy

Oh, Jerry. I am so sad and really stunned. I had no idea that she was ill. Elaine was always so "well". She never complained and seemed to float with her gracious demeanor. What a loss for you, the kids and grandkids!
I am glad I saw her at Ed's services. You both were important to him and to me.
I remember so many fun times with our families.
I admired Elaine for her beauty and toughness. What a combination!
I will see you Wednesday evening. Fondly, Marilyn

I want to express my sympathy to your entire family for your great loss. I went to graduate school with Elaine and worked in Jordan District while she was there. Elaine was always so kind and thoughtful and I know she was an inspiration to her students. I know she will be missed by many.

Britt just informed me of Elaine's death. It makes me so sad, Jerry. It breaks my heart as I sit here in tears. You know I love you and Elaine. It is sad to me that my divorce interupted such a great friendship. I love you. You have been a huge part of my life. If I can ever be helpful, please call. I would love to get our regular lunches going again if you have time. I love all your kids as well and have missed seeing them over the years. What would we do without the love of Christ and the hope of the resurrection. Larry PS I hope she enjoyed the carmel corn.

Jerry & family: As chance would have it, I was planning on paying a visit to Elaine today. We arrived home to Ogden at 12:15 a.m. this morning from southern Arizona after putting on our granddaughter's wedding reception. My sister Barbara texted me on Saturday that she had passed and it really hit me hard. My heart goes out to you for your loss. She is one of the kindest Christians I have ever known and her smile always lit up the room. I deeply regret that I didn't take the opportunity to visit more with her these years I have lived up here in Ogden. I do look forward to seeing you all at the viewing and funeral on Thursday. I am the youngest son of Vernon and Elaine Hathcock. My dad was the older brother to Helen. May the peace of our Heavenly Father rest upon you all at this time. Paul L. Hathcock
