John Richard Ehlert, 97, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away peacefully at home August 22, 2015.  Born February 20, 1918 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada to Emil Albert Ehlert and Anna Amalia Geigle.  He married Virginia Bennion on February 17, 1944 in the Salt Lake Temple.  He graduated from the University of Utah as an Electrical Engineer and served in the Navy during WWII.  John served an LDS mission in the Southern States.  He and his wife served a mission together in the California San Diego Mission.  John and Virginia were blessed with 3 daughters and 3 sons.  He served in many church capacities including counselor in the bishopric for 8 years, Bishop for 10 years in the Nibley Park Ward and temple worker for 23 years in the Salt Lake Temple.  He loved photography and for many years, produced a Christmas card with photos of his growing family.  John was a skilled woodworker and built many beautiful pieces of furniture for their home.  He also enjoyed growing a large vegetable garden.  He loved to serve his friends and neighbors using his skills with masonry, woodworking, electrical and mechanical repairs.  He spent countless hours helping his children with home remodeling projects.  His love of the Lord and fellow men was shown through his constant service.  He is survived by his wife, Virginia; children, JoAnn (Jim) Spens, Janice (David) Larsen, Richard (JoDel) Ehlert, Paul (Cathy) Ehlert, Jack (Shellie) Ehlert, 33 grandchildren and 69 great grandchildren.  Preceded in death by his parents, 4 siblings, daughter Ruth (Steve) Jackson, grandsons Samuel Ehlert and Michael Ehlert, and great-grandson Trae Wilson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the East Millcreek Chapel, 3103 East Craig Drive, with a viewing from 12:30 to 1:30 on Saturday and Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 at the Church.  Interment at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, please donate to the LDS Church missionary fund.
