Obituary for/by Lester John (Jack) Nielson Jr.—AKA DOC—DR.QWAK

What a wonderful opportunity I had to be placed here in this life to experience the love of those special people around me.

Born of loving parents-(both deceased)—Venice Hinkley and Lester J. Nielson, with one special sister—Barbara Holland with her many children. (I was always jealous of her large family).

I had a special companion, during my tour of duty on this earth—Jackie Handley, who accompanied me around the country (and the world) providing me with the many hugs and loves necessary to complete the day—finally succumbing to a special lung condition (MY SPECIAL BUTTERFLY).

My professional life was spent as a student of human nature. I advocated for comprehensive rehabilitation. First at the University of Utah--and later in Veterans centers in Utah, North Carolina and California.

Highlights of my life beyond my family-- Military time during the Korean War conflict, that ultimately resulted in almost 30 years with the VA Hospital systems-creating a special program designed to enhance rehabilitation for those having been physically or emotionally injured, to help salve the scars of post-traumatic stress disorder. I later spent twenty plus years making house calls for applicants for Social Security Disability for persons of all walks of life who had reached the depths of both physical and personal heart-aches, hoping to have made some small contribution to their lives.

I traveled the world, first as a member of the Armed Forces. In the early 1950s--spending considerable time in Germany and ultimately revisiting most of Europe several times. Also visited Russia with a group of doctors and educators (we were there when President Kennedy was assassinated) Later visited Thailand, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam with a group of medical volunteers (Choice) Rebuilding schools and delivering medical supplies. I later spent volunteer time with the Move Program at the Salt Lake Medical Center.

A special highlight was running the St. George Marathon in 1995. My feet were never the same. I had my grandson Gabriel add my running shoes to the “Shoe Tree” in the front yard (apple tree).

I considered myself a spiritual member of my Church, having spent time in a number of callings (Ward Clerk—Name extraction program—Sunday School President and nursing home advocate).

Preceded in death by my brilliant son Kirk (DNA and genetic research with patents). Survived by my beautiful daughter Britt and grandson Gabriel and many other fabulous grandchildren and great grandchildren (You know who you are and how proud I am of ya’ll)

Daughters note—my father was an amazing man who touched the lives of many people, and he surely will be missed. I know he is happy on the other side with my beautiful mom and family.

Grandsons note-My grandpa Jack was like a father to me. We had so much fun working around his Farm House on projects and learning about things together. He taught me to always help people and do what you love in life. He was always nice to everyone and brought a smile to their faces. He was the best man I know. He will be missed, but will always be with us. Thanks for everything Grandpa!! I love you so much.

A memorial service will be held Friday, November 13, 2015 at 11:00am at the East Mill Creek Stake Center, 3103 East Craig Drive, where friends and family can visit starting at 10:30am prior to the service. Jack will later be interred at the Utah Veterans Memorial Park. Online guestbook to post messages and tributes available at: www.HolbrookMortuary.com
