Even those who had even a passing acquaintance with Morris Johnson understood that he was exceptionally talented yet humble, a diligent steward yet not self-righteous, individually inspired yet always collaborative. His extraordinary contributions as an urban planning practitioner and educator have already been noted by his many friends. I wish simply to acknowledge the opportunities he created for me and the many others he befriended. He was one of the most gracious individuals I have known, and I feel blessed to have been a part of his life.

Morris, a man schooled and skilled in the design of landscapes, cities, and jewelry, was among the friends I especially appreciate and from whom I gained opportunities that were among those most important in building my life. He was a forever-supportive mentor, a loyal friend, and a model of integrity.

It is with great sadness that I learned of Morris's passing. Morris is one of the founders of the planning program at the University of Utah, a program that I now have the honor of directing. The seeds that Morris sowed have grown into an internationally recognized Department of City & Metropolitan Planning, with an undergrad major, two master's degrees, and a PhD program. More than 200 students call our department home each year, and our graduates are engaging with communities all over the U.S. and around the globe. Without Morris, none of this would have happened. We honor and remember Morris each time we gather for a meeting in the Morris Johnson Conference Room in our department offices.

On behalf of the University of Utah Department of City & Metropolitan Planning, we offer condolences to Morris's family and our gratitude for his life, creativity, and generosity.
